How to Shock a Pool (and When You Actually Need To)
Pool shock is a chlorine spike, not a weekly superstition. Here is when to shock, how much to add, what to avoid mixing, and how to know when it is safe to swim again.
Shock is the move people reach for when the water looks wrong - and sometimes when it does not. Used on purpose, it clears organics, knocks back algae, and resets sanitizer after a heavy weekend. Used as a weekly ritual with no test, it burns through chlorine, drives CYA up (depending on the product), and still leaves the real problem sitting there.
What shock actually is
Shocking a pool means raising free chlorine high enough, for long enough, to oxidize sweat, sunscreen, and the start of an algae bloom. It is a dose, not a brand. Cal-hypo granules, liquid chlorine, and dichlor tablets labeled "shock" all raise FC; they are not interchangeable in how they treat the rest of your chemistry. Dichlor adds stabilizer (CYA) every time. Cal-hypo adds calcium. Liquid chlorine does not add CYA, which is why many people prefer it once they are already in range.
When you actually need it
Shock after a test, not instead of one. Typical reasons:
- Chlorine crashed after a party, a storm, or a stretch of heat - FC near zero in warm water is an algae countdown.
- Cloudiness or a green tint that traces back to sanitizer, not just a dirty filter. (See why pool water goes cloudy.)
- Combined chlorine staying high - the "pool smell" that is chloramines, not too much chlorine.
- After a heavy bather load when you know the water took a hit and FC cannot keep up overnight.

How to dose without guessing
Bag instructions are written for a generic 10,000-gallon pool and a generic "shock" level. Your volume and your CYA change the number. A common outdoor target is to take FC well above the usual 1-3 ppm band - often into the high single digits or more, depending on CYA - then let sunlight and swimming bring it down. Test first. Calculate for your gallons. Add in the evening so the sun does not burn the spike off in an hour. Brush the walls, run the pump, and retest the next day.
Never mix shock with acid in the same bucket, and never add water to chemical - add chemical to water. Keep people and pets out until FC is back in a swimmable range (follow your product label; many people wait until it is back near 3-4 ppm or the label's clear-to-swim number).
Log it so the next shock is a decision
The useful record is: what you added, how many gallons, what FC was before and after, and whether the water actually cleared. That is how you stop buying a second bag "just in case" two days later.
