A plain quick-reference for pool water: the target ranges for free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium, and CYA, what each one does, and how often to test.

When your water turns cloudy or your eyes start to sting, the fix almost always begins with knowing which numbers should sit where. Here is a plain quick-reference for the five readings that decide whether your water is healthy.

The five numbers and their target ranges

Most home pools come down to five values. As a general guide for a typical outdoor residential pool:

  • Free chlorine (FC): 1-3 ppm. The safe minimum rises with your stabilizer level, so a pool with high CYA needs more chlorine to stay protected.
  • pH: 7.2-7.8. Aiming for the middle of this band keeps water comfortable and chlorine working efficiently.
  • Total alkalinity (TA): 80-120 ppm. This is the cushion that keeps pH from swinging.
  • Calcium hardness (CH): 200-400 ppm. Enough to protect surfaces, not so much that you get scale.
  • Cyanuric acid (CYA): 30-50 ppm for an outdoor pool. Indoor pools need little or none.

These are starting points, not gospel. Your exact targets shift with your pool surface, whether you run a salt system, and local conditions, so treat the ranges as a frame rather than a single magic number.

What each number actually does

Free chlorine is the active sanitizer - it is what neutralizes bacteria and keeps algae from taking hold. Let it drift to zero for a day in warm weather and you can lose the water fast. pH governs how comfortable the water feels and how well that chlorine performs: as pH climbs, chlorine gets sluggish, which is why a high reading can leave water feeling "off" even when chlorine looks fine on a strip.

Total alkalinity works behind the scenes as a buffer, absorbing small acids and bases so your pH holds steady instead of bouncing. Calcium hardness protects your plaster, grout, and equipment - water that is too soft pulls calcium out of surfaces, while water that is too hard leaves scale. Cyanuric acid is essentially sunscreen for chlorine: it slows how fast sunlight burns chlorine off, but too much of it blunts chlorine's punch, which is the trade-off behind that 30-50 ppm window.

How often to test

In peak swimming season, free chlorine and pH are the two you want to check most - two or three times a week is a reasonable rhythm, and more often during a heat wave or heavy use. The slower-moving values like alkalinity, calcium, and CYA generally only need a look every week or two, and CYA barely moves unless you add stabilizer or refill the pool.

Test more aggressively after anything that disturbs the water: a big storm, a pool party, a heavy rain that dilutes your chemistry, or a stretch of very hot days.
