Why Is My Pool Water Cloudy? Causes and Fixes

Cloudy pool water almost always traces back to chemistry, filtration, or debris. Here is how to find the real cause, clear it up, and keep it from coming back.

You pull off the cover expecting a sparkling blue pool and instead find something that looks like watered-down milk. Cloudy water is one of the most common pool headaches, and the good news is that it is almost always a symptom of one of three fixable things.

What actually makes water cloudy

Cloudiness is really just tiny particles suspended in the water, scattering light so you lose that see-to-the-bottom clarity. Those particles come from three main sources, and most cloudy pools are some mix of all three.

  • Chemistry out of balance. This is the usual culprit. Low free chlorine lets a bloom of bacteria and early algae cloud the water; high pH pushes dissolved calcium out of solution as a fine haze; and out-of-range alkalinity or calcium hardness can turn the water milky even when chlorine looks fine.
  • Weak filtration. A filter that is dirty, undersized, or simply not run long enough cannot catch fine particles fast enough to keep up. Running the pump too few hours a day is a frequent hidden cause.
  • Debris and bather load. Pollen, dust, sunscreen, leaves, and the aftermath of a busy pool party all dump material into the water faster than the system can clear it.

Step-by-step fixes

Once the test tells you the cause, work through it in order rather than all at once:

  • Correct the chemistry first. Bring free chlorine back into range - a shock treatment clears a bacterial or early-algae bloom - and adjust pH down toward 7.4 to 7.6 if it has drifted high. Fix alkalinity and calcium only if the test shows them out of range.
  • Run the filter hard. After correcting chemistry, run the pump longer - often 24 hours straight for a bad case - so the filter can physically pull the cleared particles out. Clean or backwash the filter first so it is working at full capacity.
  • Help the filter catch fine particles. A clarifier clumps tiny particles so the filter can grab them; a flocculant sinks them to the floor to be vacuumed to waste. Skim and vacuum out visible debris so it stops feeding the cloud.

Give each step time. Water rarely clears the instant you add something - most pools go from milky to hazy to clear over a day or two of filtering, so patience is part of the fix.
