How Thick Should a Concrete Slab Be?
The right slab thickness depends on what will sit on it. Here are the standard depths for patios, sheds, and driveways, and how thickness drives your concrete order.
Pour a slab too thin and it cracks and heaves within a few winters; pour it too thick and you have paid for concrete you never needed. The right depth is not a guess - it comes down to what the slab has to carry.
Standard thicknesses by use
Most residential slabs land in a narrow range, and the load they carry is what moves the number. As a practical starting point:
- Patios, walkways, and garden-shed floors: 4 inches (about 100 mm). Foot traffic and light furniture ask very little of a slab, and 4 inches is the long-standing minimum for anything you will stand on.
- Standard car driveways and garage floors: 4 inches for passenger cars, stepping up to 5 to 6 inches if a heavy truck, RV, or trailer will park on it.
- Slabs for outbuildings or workshops with heavy equipment: 6 inches or more, often with an engineered design once real machinery is involved.
Below 4 inches you are into stepping-stone territory, not a working slab. When in doubt, round up rather than down - the cost difference between 4 and 5 inches is small next to the cost of tearing out a failed pour.
Why thickness drives volume and cost
Thickness is the one dimension that multiplies straight through your whole slab. Volume is length × width × depth, so going from 4 inches to 6 on a 200-square-foot patio is not a small tweak - it is 50 percent more concrete, and therefore 50 percent more bags or a bigger truck order. Base and reinforcement notes
Thickness alone does not make a slab last - what sits under and inside it matters just as much. A slab wants a compacted base of 4 to 6 inches of gravel or crushed stone, leveled and tamped, so the concrete bears evenly instead of bridging soft spots. On top of that, most slabs benefit from reinforcement: welded wire mesh or a grid of rebar suspended in the middle third of the pour, which does not stop cracks from forming but holds them tight so the slab stays a single plane. Control joints tooled or cut into the surface give any shrinkage a planned place to crack rather than a random one. None of this changes your thickness, but skipping it wastes the concrete you did pour.

Once you have settled on a thickness, the order is straightforward math - but it is math with unit traps. Depth is in inches while length and width are in feet, so you have to convert before multiplying, and then decide bags versus a ready-mix truck.
