How to Cancel Free Trials Before They Charge You

Free trials are built to convert quietly into paid plans. Here is how to set a reminder, cancel cleanly on iOS, and track every trial so none slips through.

A free trial feels like a no-risk favor, but the business model behind it counts on you forgetting. The offer is genuine - the catch is that the burden of remembering to cancel sits entirely with you.

Why trials convert silently

Most trials ask for your payment details up front and roll straight into a paid term the moment the free window ends. There is usually no second prompt, no confirmation email, and no "are you sure?" - the charge simply appears. That is by design: the gap between signing up in a burst of enthusiasm and the renewal date weeks later is long enough for the trial to fall out of mind completely. By the time the charge lands, you have often forgotten which service it even was.

Annual trials and trials on apps you tried once are the worst offenders, because there is no ongoing usage to remind you the subscription exists.

Set a reminder before the renewal

The single habit that saves the most money is boringly simple: the moment you start a trial, note the exact date it converts and set a reminder a day or two before. Trials are almost always described by length - "7 days free," "one month free" - so count forward from the day you sign up and mark that date.

Give yourself a small buffer rather than aiming for the last minute. A reminder two days early leaves room to actually cancel, decide whether the service earned a place, and avoid the panic of realizing you are already past the deadline. If you juggle several trials at once, the same logic that helps you take control of your subscriptions applies here: everything in one place, every renewal date visible.

How to cancel on iOS

If the trial is for an App Store app or an in-app subscription, cancelling is quick once you know where to look:

  • Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  • Tap Subscriptions to see every active and recently expired subscription tied to your Apple Account.
  • Select the trial you want to stop and tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial).

Cancelling a trial usually lets you keep access until the free period ends - you are simply switching off the automatic renewal, not losing the remaining days. One important caveat: subscriptions you started through a website or another platform are not managed in iOS Settings, so you cancel those wherever you signed up. Always check the confirmation so you know the renewal is genuinely switched off.

Track them so none slip through

Reminders work until you are running four or five trials at once and lose track of which is which. A simple running list - service name, the date the trial started, the date it converts, and the price it becomes - turns a scramble into a glance. The point is not to cancel everything reflexively but to make each renewal a deliberate choice instead of a silent default.

Keeping that list current is exactly the kind of small chore that gets abandoned in a notes app, which is why it helps to have a tool built for it. SubLog logs each trial alongside its conversion date and reminds you before it charges, maps every renewal to a calendar, and shows your true monthly and annual totals. It is manual by design - no bank link, no account - so a couple of taps when you start a trial is all it takes to make sure the next charge is one you actually chose.
